Instructions for Ford Explorer and Wilwood internal park brake cable kit by Marscable.com

This cable kit is designed to replace the park cable in most cars with drum brakes and with the special clips it can be used for applications on rear brakes using the Ford Explorer or Wilwood parking brakes.  The design of this cable kit is not designed for emergency use and is intended for parking only.

Kit includes the following:

2 Cables with spring retainers approximately 100” long
2 Black outer cable housings 96” long with threaded ends
1 Aluminum sleeves
1
Connector cable block with clevis and pin
1 Cable retaining bracket
1 T
hreaded cable ends with adjustment nuts (cable adjusters)
2 Optional: Lever clips for the Wilwood or Ford Explorer parking brake assembly

Step 1:  Lubricate all threads with anti-seize lubricant.

Step 2: Check the round ball end on each of your cables.  These can work loose, so please check this prior to inserting in the Wilwood emergency brake clip.  These can be secured by clamping them in a vise or tac-welding the end of round ball to the cable.

Step 3: Attach the thread end of the outer cable housing to the bracket on the rear brake backing plate or the Ford Explorer/Wilwood bracket.  In some applications there may be a need to add a washer to the fitting if the backing plate is to thin to secure the fitting with the nut.

Step 4: Route your housing in a manner to avoid your driveline and exhaust system to your hand brake connector cable or floor mounted park brake handle.   The outer cable is not heat resistant and will melt with direct or indirect contact with your exhaust system.  Secure housing with clamps or ties as needed.

Step 5: Cut off the excess housing, upon determining the correct placement for the cable retainer bracket.  Insert housing and sleeve into cable adjusters and mount adjuster bracket.

Step 6:  Remove the springs from cables and install the retaining brackets on each cable.  Reinstall spring (not required on disc brake applications), attach bracket to park brake lever on backing plate.  Lightly lubricate the cable and insert cable into housing.  Loosen set the screws on the connector block and insert cable.  Attach clevis to your connector cable or hand brake lever and secure with a cotter pin.  Some applications may require a small washer on the end of the ball.  This washer should be bent to create a “U” shape and should fit snug in side the lever.

Step 7: Adjust cable and treaded adjusters as need.  Trim excess cable and check all adjustment nuts
